French verbs, general information

Regular verb groups

Verbtime differentiates between three verb groups.
These are the verbs ending on "ER", verbs ending on "RE" or "OIR" as well as verbs that end on "IR". With "IR"-verbs Verbtime differentiates between IR-verbs that are built like the verb "finir" and all other IR-verbs. Verbs that are built like "finir", are shown as "ir (iss)" or IR2. Verbtime stores IR (iss)-verbs in a list that can be extended by you, if needed (also see: Appendix, IR (iss)-verbs).

Auxiliary verbs

French verbs are conjugated using auxiliary verbs "avoir" and "être".
Most French verbs are built using auxiliary verb "avoir". Verbtime stores verbs that use auxiliary verb "être" in a list that can be extended by you, if needed (also see: Appendix, être-verbs).

Note that être-conjugated verbs change their Participe Passé in the composed times depending on verb group, singular / plural and male / female form.

For the ER-verb group the following is valid (example verb "aller"):

Singular male:[être] + Participe Passé (verb) + é(e.g. je suis allé)
Plural male: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + és (e.g. nous sommes allés)
Singular female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ée (e.g. je suis allée)
Plural female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ées (e.g. nous sommes allées)

For the RE/OIR-verb group: (example verb "descendre"):

Singular male:[être] + Participe Passé (verb) + u(e.g. je suis descendu)
Plural male: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + us (e.g. nous sommes descendus)
Singular female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ue (e.g. je suis descendue)
Plural female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ues (e.g. nous sommes descendues)

For the IR/IR2-verb group: (example verb "partir"):

Singular male:[être] + Participe Passé (verb) + i(e.g. je suis parti)
Plural male: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + is (e.g. nous sommes partis)
Singular female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ie (e.g. je suis partie)
Plural female: [être] + Participe Passé (verb) + ies (e.g. nous sommes parties)

Note:

The change of the Participe Passé depending on person and gender is the same for all verbs:

Singular male:no extensionVerb-ending = é/ u/ i
Plural male: s Verb-ending = és / us / is
Singular female: e Verb-ending = ée / ue / ie
Plural female: es Verb-ending = ées / ues/ ies
